Ressentiment is a manga that explores the depths of modern loneliness and the illusion of virtual happiness. Kengo Hanazawa delivers a sharp reflection on digital escapism and human connection in the age of technology.

Takuro Sakamoto, a 29-year-old office worker, leads a dull and lonely existence. Insecure about his looks and lacking confidence, he finds solace in the virtual world of Unreal—an immersive online game where he acquires a digital girlfriend, Tsukiko. But when she rejects his advances, he spirals into frustration and begins to question the nature of his desires and identity.

Hanazawa tackles themes such as social isolation, identity, and the blurred line between reality and virtuality. His realistic, expressive art captures the conflicting emotions of his characters, exposing their inner struggles and longing with nuance and depth.

Originally serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits from 2004 to 2005, Ressentiment was praised for its relevance and emotional complexity. It received the Sense of Gender Award in 2005, recognizing works that explore issues of gender and identity. The French edition is published by Ki-oon in two omnibus volumes.
