Soil is a manga that explores the darkness hidden beneath the surface of an apparently perfect Japanese suburb. Atsushi Kaneko weaves a story where mystery and strangeness blend to expose the cracks in a seemingly flawless community.

In the newly built town of Soil Newtown, the sudden disappearance of the Suzushiro family—leaving only a pillar of salt behind—shakes the established order. Two detectives are assigned to the case: Captain Yokoi, disillusioned and intuitive, and Lieutenant Onoda, rigid and methodical. Their investigation quickly confronts them with a string of bizarre events and increasingly unsettling behavior from the townspeople.

The manga stands out through its oppressive atmosphere and distinctive aesthetic. Kaneko’s style—heavily influenced by American indie comics and cinema, particularly the work of David Lynch—gives the story a striking visual identity. The black-and-white artwork heightens the sense of unease and isolation that pervades the town of Soil.

As the volumes progress, the story drifts from classic thriller conventions toward more symbolic and psychological territory. Themes of normality, social repression, and buried secrets are explored with growing intensity, culminating in an ending that leaves certain questions unanswered—reinforcing the enigmatic nature of the work.
